Resolutions for Corporate Wellness

Corporate Wellness programs are designed to increase production and decrease healthcare costs by educating employees on diet, exercise and reducing stress levels.

What is the general concept behind your corporate wellness program?

Dr. Chris Serafini: I’d say the general concept is really to go in and educate the employees on health and wellness. Really to give them some firsthand, reliable, pertinent information that can help them achieve health and wellness goals which ultimately decreases absenteeism, decreases disability claims, decreases healthcare costs, reduces work compensation claims, also can increase production from the workforce, increase mental and physical health of the employees. Corporate wellness is really designed for the bottom line to increase the company’s production and decrease costs of healthcare.

How does functional medicine play a role in corporate wellness?

Dr. Chris Serafini: Functional medicine really is the desire that is to get to the root cause of the problems that the patients have. Whatever is restricting them from achieving optimal health and wellness. Functional medicine really gets to the root cause of that. Once we can figure out the root cause of their health problems, then they can implement those particular suggestions or recommendations that we have which will then ultimately increase production and satisfaction as an employee. Nobody likes to work, going to work of any sort when they’re sick and tired and unhealthy.

What are some strategies that you teach to increase workers’ energy and reduce fatigue.

Dr. Chris Serafini: I like to tell a lot of the workers not to eat a lot of carbs at lunchtime. Everybody usually has that carb crash in the afternoon when they have to grab a cup of coffee or some such … A lot of times they don’t really put two and two together not to really eat a carb packed lunch. So I tell them to do that. Also, I really recommended they go for some sort of walk or even try to do some sort of workout routine at lunch or even another break during the day. A third suggestion we have is for supplementation. A lot of times just some supplements can really help with particular energy and fatigue issues.

What are some ways that employees can naturally reduce stress?

Dr. Chris Serafini: A big one that I like to use is meditation. Just really start to educate yourself on the value and the effects of meditation. So doing meditation at lunch time or a particular break during the day. Once again, go for a walk or do a workout during the day if you can. Do it at lunch or another break. Just some way of decompressing during the workday, finding time and the ability to do that helps a lot.

Can workplace productivity be improved if workers lose weight and start eating healthier?

Dr. Chris Serafini: Of course. I mean, everybody knows they need to lose weight, eat healthier, you’re going to feel better. You’re going to have more energy, less fatigue, increase your mental clarity, decrease your absenteeism rate, increase your mental and physical health. All of those can be improved with losing weight and really eating healthier.
