Dr. Chris Serafini describes his journey to becoming a chiropractor which started with his athletic career and desire to work with the body. Dr. Serafini’s chiropractic practice takes a holistic approach to individualized patient care and specializes in the Brimhall and Gonstead methods of chiropractic.
What were some of the influences that led to your decision to become a chiropractor?
Dr. Chris Serafini: Well, I was really a pretty extensive athlete coming out of high school. I ended up going into college, and playing college football. I was a personal trainer. I had kind of an athletic background.
Initially, coming out of high school, entering college, playing football, I thought I wanted to get into physical therapy. I wanted to work with the body. I wanted to work with athletes. Shortly after that, I ended up hearing some colleagues talking about chiropractic, and I didn’t know much about chiropractic at the time, so I took it upon myself to go online, and start doing some research.
Then I called some chiropractors in my area, and just asked if I could do some observation hours with them. Once I started to do that, I really started to understand the full scope of chiropractic, and once it was explained to me, it totally clicked, and it was like that was the moment that I really realized that’s what I want to do.
When did you become a licensed chiropractor, and where did you start practicing?
Dr. Chris Serafini: I graduated in ’02, and moved to Arizona from Georgia in 2002, and got licensed in 2002. Initially, I was practicing on the west side of Phoenix, and I did that for about two and a half years, and then I moved over, back in ’05, to where I’m currently practicing now, and I’ve been there ever since. So, I’ve been in practice for 15 years, and I’ve been at this same location for about 12 years.
Do you have specific chiropractic methods or areas of specialty that you focus on?
Dr. Chris Serafini: Yeah, we sure do. I think that’s really what separates us and sets us apart from a lot of other offices.
One, I do practice the Gonstead method. The Gonstead method was developed by a Dr. Gonstead. He was a mechanical engineer before he ever got into chiropractic, so he took all his knowledge of mechanical engineering and he really applied it to the spine. So all the analysis that we do, it is all based on mechanical engineering principles.
In addition to that, I am also a Brimhall, certified Brimhall doctor. Brimhall really has a full scope of chiropractic and wellness and nutrition and all the other things that we do as well. Also, I am an applied kinesiology practitioner. We use the term AK. That has to do with muscle testing and things like that, so most of your offices, if you walked into 90% of offices, they do not do those particular services.
What is the philosophy that you and your practice have adopted?
Dr. Chris Serafini: It’s a great question. We really try to look at a holistic approach when we look at the patients. The Brimhall method really focuses on three main aspects, or three main stressors. We reference those as physical stress, chemical stress, and emotional stress. Those all cause imbalance in the body. What we try to do is identify each problem, or if you have a problem in those categories, then we try to balance those to eliminate the physical stresses, the chemical stresses, the emotional stresses, and patients just really respond in doing that. It is a really holistic approach.
How has this philosophy helped patients in your area live healthier?
Dr. Chris Serafini: We really get tremendous results. I don’t mean to say that as bragging, I say that with confidence, just because we do. Tremendous results with overall, with especially difficult cases. I get many patients from other areas. They have tried physical therapy. They have tried injections. They have tried pain meds. Even, a lot of times, we have had patients who have tried other chiropractors.
We really separate ourselves from most other chiropractors with the additional services and techniques that we use.
