RC: Hello everyone, this is Liz Harvey coming to you from our razorcast™ studios in New York City where we are dedicated to bringing you top quality advice from many of the leading expert professionals across the United States.
In today’s episode, we are speaking with Dr. Chris Serafini. Dr. Serafini is the founder of Valley Spinal Care Kierland in Scottsdale, Arizona. A Pennsylvania native, Dr. Chris Serafini is a graduate of Life University in Georgia, though you may best know him from his Channel 3 health news series, “12 Days to Fitness.” Dr. Serafini has also served as the Official Chiropractor of the Gateway Pro Golf Tour.
Dr. Serafini is widely considered to be one of the top chiropractors in the country and he is also a contributing member of our national network of industry professionals.
Today we are going to talk about a very important topic: Headaches and Migraines
RC:How are you today Dr. Serafini?
Dr. Chris Serafini: I’m doing great Liz. I hope you are too.
RC: I am. Thank you so much for being here.
Question 1: Types of Headaches
RC: So I know there’s other types of headaches like tension headaches, migraine headaches, etc… are there other types of headaches besides those?
Dr. Chris Serafini: Yeah there are. There’s tension headaches, there’s cluster headaches, sinus headaches, rebound headaches. There’s many different types of headaches and it’s really the responsibility of the practitioner to kind of delineate those for the patient.
Question 2: What makes a migraine a migraine and not just a bad headache?
RC: Okay and what makes a migraine a migraine and not just a bad headache?
Dr. Chris Serafini: Once again, good question, a migraine is going to have other factors such as sensitivity to light, to sound, nausea, vomiting. Also maybe visual disturbances like seeing spots, things like that. Also, the severity of the headache really will determine if it’s a migraine as well. You won’t have a migraine if it’s just a two or a three. So those are some of the contributing factors or other issues that are related to delineating if it’s a migraine or not.
RC: Okay and what about how long it lasts? Does a migraine go away on it’s own as quickly as a headache? Or is that maybe another indication of whether or not you have a migraine?
Dr. Chris Serafini: Not necessarily, no. A migraine they can last a couple of minutes even hours.
RC: Oh okay that’s good to know.
Question 3: What are some common headache triggers?
RC: Can you tell us, what are some common headache triggers?
Dr. Chris Serafini: You can have stress, environmental factors, certain activities, emotional issues. Once again it’s a really great idea to really try to figure out what is triggering your headache. If you can figure that out, it’s important to do so.
Question 4: How can Chiropractic Care help alleviate headaches?
RC: Okay and please tell us. How can chiropractic care help alleviate headaches?
Dr. Chris Serafini: According to literature research most headache sufferers have some sort of problem in the head and neck region and that’s really chiropractic 101. As chiropractors, we evaluate (headache sufferers) their head and neck region just to determine do they have any misalignments, any pressure on nerves, things like that. Once we alleviate those problems by realigning the spine, taking the pressure off the nerves, majority of headache sufferers get fantastic results.
Question 5: What can people do at home every day to help prevent headaches?
RC: And what can people do at home every day to help prevent headaches?
Dr. Chris Serafini: I think this is a good question but it’s kind of hard to answer and I thought about this a lot and I think it’s really trying to eliminate the triggers that the patient may have. Once again, you’ve got to find out what those triggers are and try to eliminate them or at least reduce them as much as you can. But to tell somebody that you can “do this” every single day to help prevent headaches… it’s kind of a tough question to answer. So that’s how I would answer it is really just find out what your triggers are and try to eliminate them or reduce them as much as you can.
