Have You Ever Been to a Chiropractor?

You don’t have to have a bad back to visit a chiropractor. Chiropractors check your spine and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that your body and your nervous system can function at its best without any interference.

What types of questions are discussed during the first visit and consultation with the doctor?

Dr. Chris Serafini: The first visit is designed to really get a grasp of what their problems are. Their main complaints. Their symptoms, the health issues that they are having. We really want to do a broad detailed history of their problems. We want to know the duration, the intensity, the frequency of their problems and health issues. Any prior treatments that they may have used that were beneficial or not beneficial. And really, how it is affecting their life, the quality of their life. We really want to get to those core issues.

How do you determine if X-rays are needed and what kind of x-rays are taken?

Dr. Chris Serafini: That’s a good question. During the consult, we are really trying to determine the history, if they have had any past or recent traumas. If they have had any bulging disks, osteoarthritis and scoliosis, degenerative disk disease, those are all pertinent questions that you really want to take an image, an X-ray, to really determine how bad those particular issues are. We really take, what we reference to the full spine X-ray. We are going to look at the entire spine when we analyze a patient.

During the first exam, what type of adjustments are done and what do they feel like?

Dr. Chris Serafini: It depends on what area of the body needs the treatment. If it is a shoulder, a knee, or extremity, obviously adjustments are going to be in that area; we are going to concentrate in that area. We could do some cranial adjustments. We will work on the head and the skull bones, maybe the neck, the low back, the hips. It is really dependent on what the patient’s primary problem is.

What do they feel like? Adjustments really are pretty effortless. There is not a lot of pain or discomfort at all. Most of the time when patients get adjusted, often times, their first time, they’ll say, “That’s it?”, and I say, “Yep, that’s it.”  But they are really painless.

Should children be checked by a chiropractor?

Dr. Chris Serafini: This is a really prevalent question I get a lot of times. My answer to this is of course. Children have spines too. According to research, by the age of 13, most children out there have had over 1,000 traumas, so what does that mean? It means that their bodies have taken on traumas just like an adult, but they are children. They have spines just like everybody else. The best part about it, working with children, is their misalignments have not been there that long, so they are easier to fix. It is easier to fix a problem on the front end than waiting until later when it gets worse.

It’s a great question, and we treat kids of all ages. I have treated newborns. The youngest person I have treated was five days old. Most people think that when you’re treating infants, it’s a forceful adjustment. It is certainly not. It is more just like pressing, just like a little bit of pressure. It is not like your traditional adjustment you would do with an adult.

Why would someone see a chiropractor if they’re not experience any back or neck issues?

Dr. Chris Serafini: Many, many times, there are documented cases of bulging disks, scoliosis, arthritis, degenerative disk disease, and they are nonsymptomatic. These are all confirmed by MRIs or X-rays. Once again, this has all been documented. Those issues eventually, most of the time, become symptomatic. They might not be symptomatic at the time, but eventually they will. 8 out of 10 people will experience back pain sometime in their lives. Think of this like going to the dentist. Should you go to the dentist even if you don’t have a cavity? Well certainly you should. We go to the dentist so we don’t get cavities. You go to the chiropractor so you don’t get misalignments that now create degenerative disk disease or scoliosis or arthritis.

The spine is mechanical in nature. Everything that is mechanical needs maintenance and repair. It’s just like your car. You don’t wait until your car breaks down to do maintenance and repairs on it. Nor should you do that with your spine or your body.
