Dr. Chris Serafini shares about allergies and how chiropractic care can treat them. Enjoy!
Most people do not know that chiropractic care can help with allergies. Where is the connection?
Dr. Chris Serafini: When we’re talking about allergies, it’s obviously an allergic reaction by the body as a result of an exaggerated response by the immune system to substances that it recognizes as foreign – whether that’s a food substance or airborne as far as dust and pollen and different things like that. Chiropractic really helps with regulating the nervous system. As we work with patients and their spine – inside the spine houses the nervous system which is really the master control system in the entire body. That exaggerated response by the immune system, we’re trying to what we reference is regulate the nervous system so it decreases that exaggerated response by the immune system, and they don’t get that allergic reaction to those particular substances.
Are there different chiropractic treatments for different types of allergies?
Dr. Chris Serafini: There are many different treatments. I know specifically a certain technology that’s upwards of $30,000, hook you up to it and it regulates and lists out a bunch of different substances that you might be allergic to and then has remedies that go with those particular findings. There are different homeopathics. There are a lot of different treatments. Chiropractic, though, is really specific in nature as far as when we work with the spine and the nervous system in adjusting the spine, we’re trying to regulate, once again, that immune response. That’s our little bread and butter when it comes to working with allergies but there are other offshoots and other treatments as well for sure.
Are these chiropractic treatments safe for people of all ages including children?
Dr. Chris Serafini: Chiropractic is safe for all ages. My little girl was adjusted when she was five days old. Treatments are really safe and there’s really no contraindications for allergy treatments or chiropractic. Especially, a good doctor is going to do their homework really to determine are there any issues that the patient might have where we wouldn’t want to adjust them. Maybe adjustments are not for every patient. You have to really come to that conclusion by doing a good history and exam, but, yeah, chiropractic is safe for all ages.
Most people have seasonal allergies so it is ok to only see the chiropractor when symptoms flare up?
Dr. Chris Serafini: This is a great question. I use an analogy. It’s like only going to see the dentist when you have a cavity. You can do that for sure but it doesn’t make sense to do that. You go to the dentist so you don’t get cavities. You would want to go to the chiropractor prior to that allergy season so that you don’t get the allergic reaction. If you wait until you have it, sure you can go to the chiropractor then but it’s just like if you wait until you have the cavity, you can go to the dentist then. Sometimes it’s more manageable or less manageable depending on when you decide to do that. The advice would be to go see a chiropractor prior to.
What are some things people can do to help alleviate allergy symptoms?
Dr. Chris Serafini: This might sound common sense but you’d want to try to avoid the substance that’s causing the allergic reaction whether that’s dust or pollen, foods, whatever that may be, dogs. You want to try to avoid those things obviously but there are other supplements that you can take that can help with your reaction, as far as that histamine response that you have. There are supplements and really try to avoid those particular allergens is the best, best case.
